HOW DO FILMS MAKE MONEY?
There are multiple ways in which a movie makes it money. Firstly the money made from cinema ticket prices however the attendance rate has recently been going down. On top of that some of the money from the ticket sale goes to the theatre owner, normally only around 50% goes to the studio who makes the film and even less is given to them when the film is shown overseas. Merchandising is also a big way in which films get their money, since the release of Star Wars in 1977 they have racked up $12 billion in revenue on toy licensing alone, as a comparison, the Star Wars movies have brought in $4 billion in box office revenue, so merchandising has made four times of what the actual movie has made. Foreign sales is also a big way movies make their money. They sell the distribution rights to foreign countries and this helps cover the films budget. If the film has big, well known names that "travel" overseas the the movie will typically do well. The last way is DVD/TV/STREAMING RIGHTS/VOD. A couple of years ago it was all about DVD sales. Now, it’s far more about Video On Demand (VOD), television rights and streaming rights. It's a well known fact that Netflix and Amazon are taking over the rental film industry, when the studio sells streaming rights to these company they could gain in excess of $100 million. |
