Titles
The title of a project can often be the very last thing decided in the creative process, or sometimes even long before the filming has even started. The title often relates to the events of the film, a character or something else based in the narrative. Films at the end of the day can help generate interest just by having a catchy, familiar title. For example, horror films such as The Babadook, Orphan and Annabelle would have caught the eye of film fans as it is unusual and unlike typical film titles. This is an example of a film title defying the convention as it is not a scary sounding name until the film is watched. Although, titles which conform to horror such as The Exorcist, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre and Halloween all of connotations of something scary which therefore make it fit the genre.
Our Title
Our Title of our project was The Sanctuary, which is also the name of the group featured in the trailer. We called them The Sanctuary because the idea of "sanctuary" means somewhere safe to escape persecution, the exact concept that this group is offering. We thought to make our title the same as the name of the group as it creates a level of continuity from the poster and magazine. The audience are therefore already familiar with the name and the promotion of the group before entering the theatre to watch the full film. This not only increases awareness but also helps to generate hype amongst the horror fandom.
Taglines
Taglines are what accompanies the title of a film in the advertising campaign. They offer more of an incite into what the film is about and also helps to set the tone for what the story could consist of. They can often be as important as the title of a film and can help to identify a film just by hearing the words. For example, Alien's tagline of "In Space No One Can Hear You Scream" has become arguably one of the most famous taglines in history and has helped people to identify the film. Also, films such as Friday the 13th's " A 24 Hour Nightmare of Terror" and Child's Plays's "He Wants You For A New Best Friend".
Our Tagline
Our tagline was " Your Healing Starts Here", which is spoken at the very end of the trailer just before the end. The phrase we thought reflected, the title of the film and what the group is all about. They want the process of "healing" to occur in order to make their followers stronger willed, submissive and obedient. In order to that they must "heal" them of their ways before any form of evolution can begin. It was supposed to be short and snappy in order to be hopefully be more memorable. It also, much like the title, does not outwardly portray any conventions or traits of the horror genre. We wanted to really emphasise simplicity and innocence to really shock our audiences once they get in a theatre and watch the full film.
