Magazine Cover Examples
On the cover of this British GQ we have an example of a main actor promoting a film. This cover features Samuel L Jackson promoting Tarantino's new film 'Hateful Eight'. Samuel L Jackson is centred in the middle of the magazine cover in order to direct attention to the magazine and draw people in. Featuring an incredibly famous face on a magazine cover often helps the sales as people are drawn to what they recognise. Samuel L Jackson has an incredible filmography with leading roles in Pulp Fiction, Captain America and Kong Skull Island.

This magazine cover by Empire promotes the Star Wars film 'The Force Awakens'.
On the cover of Entertainment Weekly we have Adam Driver as Kylo Ren in a staged scene from The Force Awakens. He is wielding his unique lightsaber posing in snowy conditions which is replicated from the film. A scene from the film itself headlining the magazine covers gives a further incite of what to expect in the film and draws in potential audience members. For those who have already seen the film, magazines like this are often collector's items and niche memorabilia from the films release. |
This magazine cover by Fangoria promotes 'Pan's Labryinth'.
This cover of Fangoria presents a direct scene taken from 'Pan's Labryinth'. The cover features 'Pale Man' played by Doug Jones, arguably the creepiest character in the film. |
This magazine cover by Empire promotes 'Hellboy 2'.
On the cover of Empire magazine, we have actor David Harbour promoting the 'Hellboy 2' film in full costume. He plays Hellboy, a 'demon' superhero. By having a major character from the film on the cover of the magazine, wearing their full costume gives the audience an incite into what to expect in the film, or if they have seen it they could be drawn to the magazine as they recognise the actor and their attire. |
There are four main types of magazine cover which include:
- A picture of the main actor out of costume.
- The main character in costume.
- A staged scene from the film.
- An actual scene from the film.
WHAT WE DID?
Our group decided to have our main character as the centre of focus in a staged shot. Below is our first attempt at our poster (right) and our final product (left).
