Notes on Lighting
Lighting is crucial because it can help create an atmosphere in the filming process. Throughout the filming of The Sanctuary's trailer, lighting was something we tried to consider as much as possible. We tried to incorporate two different lighting scales representing the positive and negative approaches to who the cult is.
High Key LightingHigh-key lighting is a style of lighting for film, television, or photography that aims to reduce the lighting ratio in the scene. It is now used to suggest an upbeat mood or a sense of equillibrium.

LOW KEY LIGHTINGLow key light accentuates the contours of an object by throwing areas into shade while a fill light or reflector may illuminate the shadow areas to control contrast. It can be used to represent a sense of disequilibrium and unease.

For example, in the meeting room where the groups leader Alpha gives his addresses to the followers, you will find the the lighting to be bright and natural, representing a state of equilibrium where everything is ok. This not only creates a stable environment but also paints the group in the illusive supporting light we wanted them to be portrayed in. However, you will find the more disturbing scenes to be filmed in a much darker lighting, thus representing a far more darker atmosphere. It also helps to show that this group has a much darker ulterior motive.
