WHAT ARE GOOGLE TRENDS?
Google Trends is a site powered by Google that allows users to search for anything and see what other uses have searched for in relation to that.
This tool was really useful for us as we were able to see what the people and our potential audiences were interested in. We did this by searching key words that are related to our horror trailer to see what other users had looked for.

HOW DID WE USE IT?
We used Google Trends to search the word 'horror' and see what other viewers had been searching. One of the first things was a list which showed the highest rated horror films by fans and critics on the website Metacritic. The image to the right shows the list of horror films with the highest Metascore; Psycho was at the top after gaining a score of 97. This showed us that many films on the list including the best rated film were slashers. This suggested to our group it might be a good idea to make our film into a slasher as that is a very popular category with many successful films in it which could suggest this is the genre we want to use if we want our trailer to be as successful as possible.
Many of the films on the list are from the horror sub-genre 'supernatural'. We could have incorporated elements of the 'supernatural' into our trailer since it is based on a religious cult, but chose not to. We wanted our film to be first and foremost a 'slasher' heavily weighted in human evil and violence. Despite not wanting to incorporate the obvious elements of the 'supernatural' we thought it would still be useful to incorporate popular themes and techniques. This includes jump scares and creepy/abandoned settings. |
